Artist statement

In my work I embrace asymmetry as a representation of natural variations, rather than imperfection, as expressions of the natural world’s geometry to be celebrated. How seed pods or river stones, for instance, will have one side slightly larger, or more curved, indented or higher than the other. And yet they are still beautifully whole. I notice how these objects in the world around me take form and the shapes I create are my way of interpreting what I see. Forms with an off-center profile and an undulating movement appeal to me as a way of exploring rhythm in an otherwise inanimate object. I often listen to music as I work and getting into a gestural and intuitive flow with sound seems to help my hands to express shape and texture when I’m building. I find this fluidity and a little wobble to the form create a unique beauty.

Coil building gives me a sense of freedom to build in any angle I choose: directing the structure of the form and simultaneously allowing the asymmetry to develop naturally as I add layers and move my hands. It’s a way of transferring the energy of emotions out of my body through my hands. Building up as a way of letting go.
